Malaria is thought to have killed more people throughout the world than all wars combined prior to World War II. Recently, two new vaccines were approved by the World Health Organization, and the PC(USA) is supporting bipartisan efforts to continue efforts to distribute these vaccines to low-income countries.1
TOGETHER, WE CAN STOP MALARIA!
Church partners in Africa decry the morbidity, mortality, and economic drain caused by malaria.
- Malaria claims more than 600,000 lives each year
- 95% of malaria deaths are in Africa
- 4 out of 5 deaths are children under 5
We celebrate that after decades of research, two vaccines have recently been approved to aid the fight against malaria.
The Gavi Resolution (H.Res. 1286 and S.Res.684) affirms continued US bipartisan Congressional support for the purchase of vaccines in low-income countries through Gavi, a global public-private health partnership, as a cost-effective, efficient means to end preventable child and maternal deaths. Please join PC(USA) Africa Mission Networks and the Office of Public Witness to continue support of Gavi. Also ask that in the appropriations process funds be made available to support the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative.
