FIRST FRIENDS
First Friends is a group at First Presbyterian created to help, welcome and befriend refugee families. “First Friends” was chosen as a name because we are from “First” Presbyterian Evanston, and we may also be some of the “first” people that these people will encounter in the US. People in the group will have opportunities to serve through hosting dinners, reaching out to new families, and volunteering in other capacities to help local refugees thrive in their new lives in the USA. Some volunteers will serve informally through our church, though others may choose to serve through World Relief.
Every first Saturday of the month, First Presbyterian Church opens its doors for the First Friends Breakfast Gathering—a warm and welcoming space. This event brings together women to learn, grow, laugh and enjoy each other. Through hospitality and relationships rooted in Christ’s love, this gathering offers a place to feel empowered, uplifted, and valued. It’s more than a meal; it’s an opportunity to relax, connect, and build community. This is a space where women can belong, where their journeys are honored, and where hope and fellowship flourish. All are welcome to come as they are. For more details don’t hesitate to contact Bridgette – BridgetteGilchrist@hotmail.com.
Anyone in the congregation who has a heart to help refugee families is welcome, whether as an individual, small group, couple or family. All members who volunteer with First Friends will need to attend one training session to be prepared to minister to the families we interact with. (At least one member of the family is asked to attend if their family wishes to volunteer) These specialty training sessions will be scheduled in the spring. Other volunteer opportunities occur throughout the year with onetime events and with special needs.
