First Friends
First Friends is a group at First Presbyterian created to help, welcome and befriend refugee families. “First Friends” was chosen as a name because we are from “First” Presbyterian Evanston, and we may also be some of the “first” people that these people will encounter in the US. People in the group will have opportunities to serve through hosting dinners, reaching out to new families, and volunteering in other capacities to help local refugees thrive in their new lives in the USA. Some volunteers will serve informally through our church, though others may choose to serve through World Relief.
Anyone in the congregation who has a heart to help refugee families is welcome, whether as an individual, small group, couple or family. All members who volunteer with First Friends will need to attend one training session to be prepared to minister to the families we interact with. (At least one member of the family is asked to attend if their family wishes to volunteer) These specialty training sessions will be scheduled in the spring. Other volunteer opportunities occur throughout the year with one time events and with special needs.
