Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

I have been talking with the staff and praying over which texts to preach in worship this fall, beginning this week. I am choosing the Lectionary texts from the Old Testament book of Exodus because they are awesome stories of our awesome God at work. The Lectionary pushes us to immerse ourselves in these faith-building stories every three years—so why would we pass up this opportunity to travel along with the Hebrews as they leave Egypt and journey toward the Promised Land? It’s a great match for a transition time in a church; these Scriptures help to build our trust and faith in our big God who acts in big ways.

This fall as I preach on “Road Signs & Wonders,” our goals are:

To meet anew the God who guides us on our journey, who is present with us in our hard places,
and who leads us and our community of faith in a good future made for us.

We’ll look closely at how the Exodus Scriptures function as road signs, revealing to us:

  • Who is God?
  • What are God’s ways?
  • How can we follow God?

We’ll see that a transition time is a good place to encounter God. Our good God wants to lead us, promises God will help us. God doesn’t always/usually lead how or where we expect God to lead.  When God leads us, we begin to see God where we least expect.

For example, have you ever wondered about the backstory of Moses? Where did his strength and passion begin? This Sunday, we’ll meet the clever community of women who saved Hebrew babies from danger by following God’s command (at a time when Pharaoh tried his best to put a dangerous curve in their road). Please join me as we journey this fall along with the Hebrews as they travel through the wilderness, guided by Road Signs & Wonders.

On the journey with you,

Pastor Tassie
