Summer Adult Education: Angels, Adversaries, and the Invisible Realm
This summer, our Adult Education class invites you into a thoughtful exploration of spiritual beings both as they are imagined in culture and revealed in Scripture. Together, we’ll engage both teaching and discussion as we seek a deeper understanding of the unseen world and its impact on our lives.
Part 1: Angels and Spirits in Scripture and Culture
From fine art to contemporary media, portrayals of spiritual beings are everywhere. But how closely do these depictions align with what we find in the Bible?
Through eight engaging lectures, we’ll examine and discuss:
- The Heavenly Choir
- The Heavenly Host
- Earthly Enforcers
- Angels as Ministers
- Angels as Messengers
- Angel Worship?
- The Adversary
- The Angel of “Light”
Together, we’ll reflect on how “common knowledge” compares with biblical truth and why it matters.
Part 2: The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis
We’ll also turn to C.S. Lewis’s classic The Screwtape Letters, a brilliantly written series of fictional letters from a senior demon to his apprentice.
Through guided reading and discussion of all 31 letters, we’ll consider:
- What does this fictional portrayal reveal about human nature?
- Does our enemy understand us more than we realize?
- What spiritual insights can we take seriously in our daily lives?
Lewis’s work is at once humorous and deeply convicting, offering a unique lens on temptation, faith, and perseverance.
